However, life will be a little different over the next year or two. Not only will you need to make adjustments at home, but you’ll also need to follow your orthodontist’s instructions while you’re at work. Here are 5 tips to help you get through the workday while adjusting to braces.

1. Create a Travel Oral Hygiene Kit

You’ll have to step up your oral hygiene routine to prevent decay around the brackets and keep gum disease at bay. Food particles and plaque can get trapped in your braces, so you must brush and floss after every meal, including after your lunch break. Create a travel-sized oral hygiene kit with a toothbrush, floss, and other essentials, like dental wax.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

If you’re like many adults, you might rely on coffee or caffeine to get through the day. Although it can give you the burst of energy you need, caffeine dries out your mouth. A dry mouth is a perfect place for bacteria growth, which can lead to bad breath and harm your teeth and gums. Drink plenty of water to rinse your mouth in between brushing and flossing. It will also keep you hydrated, so you’ll feel your best and your mouth will stay moist.

3. Watch What You Eat

When packing your lunch, choose the foods you include carefully. Your dentist will have reviewed dietary changes you’ll have to follow, like skipping anything sticky, hard, or chewy. Instead, pack soft, nutritious foods in your lunch box.

4. Keep Object Out of Your Mouth

Work stress might make you chew on your pen or bite your fingernails, but you must keep objects out of your mouth. Chewing on items can break a bracket or wire. It can also damage your teeth, resulting in a dental emergency.

5. Don’t Be Embarrassed

You’re never too old to invest in a straight smile, so don’t be embarrassed if you have braces. 1 in 5 orthodontic patients is now over the age of 18. Although you might look a little different for a few months, be proud of your investment. Not only are you well on your way to having a straight, beautiful smile, but you’ll also promote your oral and general health.

You’ll have to make a few changes during your orthodontic treatment, but they will feel routine in no time at all, whether you’re at home or in the office.

About Dr. Travis Rottman

Dr. Rottman achieved his dental degree from the Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry and has regularly continued his education in many specialties, including orthodontics and general dentistry.
